The Dawes Era Exhibit

The Dawes Era Exhibit

Year exhibited 2019

Centered on the Chickasaw Nation during the Dawes Era, which spans the late 19th through early 20th century, the exhibit shared the story of the Chickasaw Nation’s tribal sovereignty through the conflicting narratives and opinions regarding tribal successes in Indian Territory, the details of the Dawes Rolls and the allotment processes.

To illustrate this history, artifacts and archival documents were on display from the Chickasaw Nation Collection, including stickball sticks and dolls owned by original Dawes enrollees, a copy of the Sequoyah Constitution of 1905, and Homestead and Allotment patents received by Chickasaw citizens.

The Dawes Era marked a changing time for Chickasaw people, politics and culture.
