Make plans for Saturday, April 11 and join us for Ilimpa’chi’ Indigenous Food Sovereignty Day. Experience live food demonstrations with Crystal Wahpepah and Jason Champagne and explore the power of Indigenous food traditions.

10 a.m.-noon

1 p.m.-2 p.m.
Food demonstration in Chikasha Inchokka' Traditional Village.

2:30 p.m.
A meet and greet as well as a Q&A session will take place in the Chikasha Inchokka' Traditional Village.

In the event of inclement weather, all will be inside the Anoli' Theater lobby.

Guest chefs:

  • Crystal Wahpepah

Crystal Wahpepah is a registered member of the Kickapoo Nation of Oklahoma. She is the creative tour de force behind the inventive, healthy and delicious dishes served at her restaurant, Wahpepah’s Kitchen, in Oakland, California. Wahpepah is an inductee into the “Native American Almanac,” was a finalist for the James Beard Emerging Chef Award and has appeared on National Geographic's “Queens,” CBS’s “The Dish,” Food Network’s “Chopped” and “Beating Bobby Flay.” She serves as a U.S. State Department culinary ambassador and has catered for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and for the American Indian Film Festival.

  • Jason Champagne

Jason Champagne is a member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa and owner of Native Chef LLC. He is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School. In addition, Champagne holds a bachelor’s degree in community nutrition from the University of North Dakota and a master’s degree in public health nutrition from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

Through his business, Champagne’s goal is to help others understand that food can be a powerful, positive medicine and learning how to cook is the key to making it healthy, affordable and delicious.
